Therapy for Depression and Mood Disorders in Houston, Texas
It's not just sadness. And it's not your fault.
Driven by passion
Depression can look like feeling nothing at all. Like going through the motions with a smile in place while something essential feels hollowed out. Like a successful career and a full life that somehow feels completely empty. At Key Points Counseling, our therapists understand the complexity of depression — including the kind that's hidden, high-functioning, or has been present so long it feels like just "who you are." You don't have to stay here. Evidence-based therapy works, and we're ready to help.
What Depression Looks Like
Most people picture depression as someone who can't get out of bed. But depression is one of the most misunderstood mental health conditions — because it can hide in plain sight, especially in people who are still showing up, still performing, still "fine."
Depression can look like:
Persistent emptiness, numbness, or flatness
Losing interest in things that used to bring joy
Fatigue that sleep doesn't fix
Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
Withdrawing from people you care about
Moving through the day on autopilot
It can also look like:
High achievement masking deep exhaustion
Irritability instead of sadness
Overeating, undereating, or changes in sleep
Feeling like a burden to others
Struggling to feel hopeful about the future
Wondering if anything will ever feel different
Note: If you've been living with some version of this — whether for weeks, months, or years — you deserve more than just pushing through. Depression is not a character flaw or a failure of willpower. It's a condition that responds to the right treatment.
How We Treat Depression and Mood Disorders
-
At Key Points Counseling, we use evidence-based approaches proven to address depression at its roots, not just manage the symptoms.
-
CBT helps you identify the negative thought patterns that depression uses to distort how you see yourself, the world, and the future — and replace them with more grounded, accurate perspectives.
-
Depression narrows your world. Behavioral activation helps you systematically re-engage with meaningful activities to rebuild momentum, connection, and a sense of purpose.
-
Depression often strains relationships — and strained relationships often deepen depression. IPT addresses both, helping you improve your connections while processing grief, loss, or role transitions.
-
When depression is tied to unresolved trauma or adverse life experiences, EMDR addresses the underlying wound rather than just managing the surface symptoms.
-
Especially effective for preventing relapse, MBCT teaches you to notice depressive thought patterns early and shift your relationship to them before they take hold.
-
We look at sleep, physical health, relationships, identity, and purpose. Depression affects every dimension of your life, and treatment should too.
Depression Therapy FAQs
How do I know if what I'm feeling is depression or just a hard season?
1
A difficult period usually has a clear trigger and lifts as circumstances improve. Depression tends to persist across situations, affects multiple areas of your functioning, and often doesn't have a clear reason. If low mood, low energy, or loss of interest have lasted more than two weeks and are affecting your daily life, it's worth speaking with a therapist.
I'm still going to work and taking care of my responsibilities. Can I really be depressed?
2
Yes. High-functioning depression is real and common. The fact that you're still showing up doesn't mean you're not struggling. It often means you're working twice as hard to keep it together. Many of our clients describe "performing normal" while feeling completely hollowed out inside.
Will I need medication for depression?
3
Not necessarily. Many people experience significant improvement through therapy alone. Others benefit from a combination of therapy and medication. Our therapists don't prescribe medication but work closely with prescribers when medication is part of your plan. We'll discuss your options during your free consultation.
How can I contact you?
